Yorkshire & Humberside
Yorkshire is Britains largest county and situated in
the North of England. The capital is the medieval walled city
of York, founded by the Romans in AD71 Eboracum as York was
known then was one of the 2 capitals of Roman Britain. In 886
the Vikings captured York and renamed it Yorvik which
changed to York in the year 1000.
York has many museums, including the popular Yorvik Viking
Centre. The city is also home to Yorkminster the second largest
gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. If you have the energy to
climg the tower steps you will see some amazing views.
The Shambles is a narrow medieval street full of gift shops,
boutiques and old worldy tea rooms. Great to explore and
imagine what York was like a few hundred years ago. The
nightlife in York is pretty good. There are plenty of diverse
restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
Other places of interest in Yorkshire are the seaside
resorts of Bridlington, Scarborough and Filey, cities of
Leeds and Doncaster, the Yorkshire Dales, Peak District and
North York Moors, Skipton with the most complete medieval
castle in the UK and Haworth where the literary Bronte
family lived.
