Cornwall The most popular sport of Cornwall is no doubt Rugby, but football has increased in
popularity recently. Largest following belongs to Truro City F.C. and now they play in the Premier division of
Western League. Cornish rugby team also dubbed as Trelawny s Army used to pull large number of supporters to where
ever its matches were held in the county championship. London Cornish are an excellent team along with London
Irish, London Welsh and London Scottish.
Basketball team called the Cornwall Cougars is the only National League that represents the county and is based in
St Austell. A Devon based professional club called Plymouth Raiders, who are a top tier British Basketball League,
also pull many supporters and spectators from Cornwall. At the start of 21st century, the only fully professional
speed team in Cornwall were the Trelawny Tigers speedway team, who used to race at the Clay Country Moto Parc
located near St Austell in the clay pits. During this period a local young speedway rider called Chris Harris
appeared, who has taken over as one of the world s best riders.
He is very celebrated in Cornwall and has two times won the local television personality of the year award. Chris,
who is nicknamed as Bomber, appeared from the grass track racing, which is Cornwall s another popular sport. He
these days is taking part in the Speedway Grand Prix, an aristocratic speedway competition. Cricket came to
Cornwall in 1816 and this county does not have a powerful cricket team.
North coast of Cornwall is famous for surfing because of its miles of coastline, many different oceanic sports are
quite popular in Cornwall, especially surfing and sailing. International tournaments in both these sports are
organized in Cornwall. Inter Celtic Watersports Festival was hosted by Cornwall in 2006.
Notably surfing especially very popular in such locations as Bude and Newquay which offer some of the best surfing
locations in the whole of the UK. Pilot gig rowing is also popular since many years. The World championships are
hosted annually on the Isles of Scilly.
Sea and inland cliffs have made Rock Climbing popular since introductory work of A. W. Andrews and others since
early 1900s. Now it has been developed technically to the maximum.
Cornwall has a rich kitchen heritage and Newlyn is the biggest fishing port in whole of UK if you count by value of
fish arrivals. It is fertile fishing peninsula that s surrounded by three sides by the sea. So naturally, Cornwall
has fresh seafood that is always available
One very famous fish dish which is prepared locally is Stargazy pie, a fish based pie where the heads of the fish
are pierced through the piecrust, as if star gazing. This pie is cooked for the part of ritual celebrations on Tom
Bawcock s Eve.
Cornwall is most probably famous for its pasties, a delicious dish made from pastry that has edible fat. These day
s pasties probably are made of a filling of beef steak, potato, onion and swede with white pepper and salt, but
traditional pasties have lots of unusual fillings. Turmut, tates and mate it certainly means Turnip, potatoes and
meat defines a filling that once was very common.
