Capital of the North:
One of the English Core Cities Group, Manchester is famous for
more than just being the world’s first industrialized town.
Today, Manchester is a world famous center for popular arts and
higher education. Manchester is now regarded as the ‘world’s
fastest growing city-economically’, according to a survey. It
is also heralded as the third most visited city in the United
Kingdom and home to the premier league football teams:
Manchester United and Manchester City. The city is also often
referred to as the ‘Capital of the North’.
Manchester’s History:
The name of the city has it origin in the Roman name
‘Mamucium’, which probably meant ‘breast town’! The city was
inhabited even during the great medieval Roman rule in Europe.
The popular tourist attraction the Manchester Cathedral was the
creation of Thomas de la Warre, the lord of the manor. The
premises now house a popular school of music and a library.
