Channel Islands

Although the Channel Islands are British Crown dependencies
they are not part of the United Kingdom. The group of islands
are situated in the English channel close to Normandy
on the French coast. The channel islands have 2 separate self
governing bailiwicks, Jersey and Guernsey with St Helier being
the capital of Jersey and St Peter Port the capital of
Guernsey.
The islands of Alderney, Sark, Herm, Jethou, Brecqhou and
Lihou are all inhabited islands within the Guernsey bailiwick
as are the smaller uninhabited islands of Burhou and the
Casquets. The bailiwick of Jersey includes the small unhabited
islets of Minquiers, Écréhous, Les Dirouilles and Les Pierres
de Lecq.
The Chausey islands, which are to the south of Jersey are
generally defined as French Channel Islands because they are
under French jurisdiction and not British Crown
dependencies.
Although tourism is one of the major industries of the
Channel Islands, financial services and the agricultural
industry are strong on the islands.
